OrigÂiÂnal Episode: QAV 428 Club
Cameron 00:07
WelÂcome back to QAV, TK. Episode 428. Still in lockÂdown. It was just like Episode 427. And you told me earÂliÂer that someÂbody said that it could go on for a long time. NorÂman Swan said someÂthing?
Tony 00:27
Yep, still. Still here still at home. He did.⊠ProÂfesÂsor NorÂman Swan today.⊠You could just see the faces of the peoÂple interÂviewÂing him. They just dropped. It was like, they were talkÂing about the COVID outÂbreak in SydÂney. And I think we had 117 casÂes yesÂterÂday, and weâve got 89 today or someÂthing. He said, âYes, this could go on for 5 or 6 months in SydÂneyâ. He said, âYou may still⊠Heâs in SydÂney. So he said, âWe may still be here until ChristÂmasâ, which was a cheery thought. Very surÂprisÂing, because, you know, the govÂernÂment still says or maybe next week, maybe next week.
Cameron 01:02
Wow. So how are you holdÂing up?
Tony 01:05
Yes, Iâm good. RealÂly. Itâs been a bit of a holÂiÂday. Iâm probÂaÂbly startÂing to get a bit bored now. Itâs been three weeks. But now, Iâm good. Iâm just enjoyÂing it. I was telling someÂone earÂliÂer today, I think Iâve saved about 2 hours a day by not going for walks and not playÂing golf and pracÂticÂing golf, going to the gym, all that kind of stuff. So yes, Iâve just been catchÂing up on all the old jobs and lots of the progress on QAV on three point trendÂline automaÂtion and Dylanâs back testÂing and all thatâs been good.
Cameron 01:37
Youâre getÂting some exerÂcise in that?
Tony 01:39
Yes, I do about half an hour of stretchÂing and tightÂenÂing in the mornÂing still, only just to keep my back in order⊠[crosstalk]
Cameron 01:46
Have you got a treadÂmill?
Tony 01:47
No, I was one down stairs, but we canât use it.
Cameron 01:51
The gym now you should get one just delivÂered put it on the deck. [uninÂtelÂliÂgiÂble 01:56] treadÂmill overÂlookÂing a bike or someÂthing. If you are going to there for six months?
Tony 02:00
Well, we canât. OffiÂcialÂly we can go for a 10k walk like you can go 10k radius. So I mean, I was [crosstalk 02:07] for the last couÂple of weeks because we had a COVID case in the buildÂing but thatâs getÂting closÂer and closÂer to two weeks ago. So I think when that hapÂpens, Iâll feel a lot more comÂfortÂable going out into the local area.
Cameron 02:19
Right⊠Get going on walks. And I believe weâre startÂing a cookÂing show spin off from this. Whatâs cookÂing TK? Weâre going to call it, youâve been cookÂing? You told me.
Tony 02:33
Yes, JenÂny and I both cook. We have been going doing like one big shop a week, which is like we used to do before we moved into the city apartÂment. And then cookÂing.⊠So you probÂaÂbly only have two meals a day. So caloÂries have been rationed back since weâre not going out all the time. And weâre not exerÂcisÂing. Itâs actuÂalÂly being good. [crosstalk 02:56] cooked on SunÂday.
Cameron 02:59
I did not know that you knew how to cook. Iâm shocked.
Tony 03:05
Oh, yeah, I raised a famÂiÂly, mate. You canât not do that.
Cameron 03:08
[laughÂter] Yes fair point. Good stuff. Well, thatâs good. Iâm glad youâre keepÂing your spirÂits up. Iâll tell you what raised my spirÂits in the last week was lookÂing at the open endÂed equiÂty fund perÂforÂmance in MornÂingstar for the 2021 finanÂcial year. Some realÂly great results there. PerÂpetÂuÂal WholeÂsale Geared AusÂtralian 98% return. AusÂbil AusÂtralian Geard EquiÂty 86% return. AMP CapÂiÂtal SpeÂcialÂist Geared AUS Share A 70% return, SpheÂria AusÂtralian SmallÂer ComÂpaÂnies 57%, PM CapÂiÂtal GlobÂal ComÂpaÂnies 52, PenÂgana EmergÂing ComÂpaÂnies 50%, VanÂguard InterÂnaÂtionÂal Small ComÂpaÂnies Index 49%. And then comÂing in at numÂber 8 Spot QAV portÂfoÂlio at 48%, leadÂing HypeÂrÂiÂon GlobÂal Growth ComÂpaÂnies at 46%. If we were a fund, we would have come in at numÂber 8 last year.
Tony 03:27
Yes, thatâs pretÂty low for us. We should be aimÂing highÂer. I think we should be going out and gearÂing the fund.
Cameron 04:21
Would that make any difÂferÂence?
Tony 04:22
Well, thatâs what some of those, I think the top perÂformer was geared, wasÂnât it? So it should douÂble your returns if youâre 100% geared.
Cameron 04:27
OK, is that how that works?
Tony 04:29
Yes, itâs a return on equiÂty and I think theyâre quotÂing return on equiÂty. So if youâve got lots of debt also exposed to the same stratÂeÂgy you should be makÂing twice the returns. Think back when we had GEAR and our portÂfoÂlio which was a geared Aussie Stock ETF⊠if you have a look at the share price graph of that and comÂpare it to the ASX, it basiÂcalÂly went up twice as fast and crashed twice as fast because of the gearÂing. Last year when the COVID cough was going on, we spoke about peoÂple gearÂing up to buy back in I wish I had, because like that kind of 48% return would have been much highÂer if we geared up to do it.
Cameron 05:10
Well, as I pointÂed out in my FaceÂbook post on this, you know, Iâm sure all of these funds have huge staff of full time highÂly paid highÂly skilled proÂfesÂsionÂals workÂing 80 hours a week devotÂing themÂselves runÂning their funds. You spend, I donât know, half an hour a week thinkÂing about what QAV portÂfoÂlio should do, over cofÂfee lookÂing at your winÂdow, and you beat 7 of them.⊠You beat all but 7 of them, I mean to say. Well, there you go. And I was surÂprised by this, actuÂalÂly. Because I thought well, the marÂket had a great year last yearâs. As we said last week best year recordÂed hisÂtoÂry for the ASX. Maybe in pre recordÂed hisÂtoÂry in the before times before we recordÂed things. The ASX did betÂter, but, and yet those perÂforÂmances werenât always thinkÂing there would be like 300% and 400%, and all that kind of stuff but apparÂentÂly they didÂnât all just by afterÂpay. And hold on to it all year long.
Tony 06:22
Yes, well, I mean, to be fair to them, theyâre probÂaÂbly operÂatÂing a much bigÂger fund. So they wouldÂnât have C6C and some of those smallÂer comÂpaÂnies that we have true in their [crosstalk 06:33] But I guess to put it also in perÂspecÂtive, I doubt if thereâs many peoÂple out there who are comÂpleteÂly investÂed in one of those funds. They usuÂalÂly would spread themÂselves over a numÂber of funds, just to balÂance out diverÂsiÂfy the risk, which would have been the stanÂdard sort of finanÂcial advice but good luck for someÂone if they were holy spoilÂers investÂed in one of those funds but, you know, Iâd be fairÂly cerÂtain those funds wonât be the top funds next year because thereâll be a dogs of the Dow in reverÂsal sort of the thing that goes on with fund manÂagers that one parÂticÂuÂlar stratÂeÂgy, like gearÂing into overÂseas small caps has worked well this year, but it may not work next year. I know from my expeÂriÂence that the QAVs always up there in terms of its perÂforÂmance. Itâs very rare that it underÂperÂforms that league table.
Cameron 07:28
But itâs a good point that you know, weâre buyÂing some of the smallÂer stocks that they wouldÂnât be able to invest in speakÂing of which, I think you know, I bought GLE a litÂtle while back, itâs moved. Itâs done nothÂing. Then it rockÂetÂed up 3% out of nowhere today and then fell 6% an hour latÂer, so TayÂlor and I were high fivÂing at 10 oâclock, and by 11 oâclock we were cryÂing. So I thought it was him that sold. I thought it went up and then it was him or his mate Chris it got out as went up just to crash my my holdÂings. Alright, othÂer news of the week Mark Mangano sent us a note one on FaceÂbook, âJust want to say thanks as a comÂpleteÂly novice investor, Iâve endÂed up with a 61.63% total return for the last finanÂcial year accordÂing to share site. ObviÂousÂly not expectÂing that sort of return every year but QAV is defÂiÂniteÂly workÂing well for meâ. ConÂgratÂuÂlaÂtions, Mark.
Tony 08:34
Heâs where is he on the fund table. Heâd be numÂber one wouldÂnât he?
Cameron 08:39
He be numÂber 1, 2, 3, 4?.⊠Heâd be numÂber 4.
Tony 08:43
Yes hold on, Mark, you might have a new career.
Cameron 08:47
Yes, he should email some of these fund manÂagers and say, âHey, you know, I need a job. You should hire meâ. BufÂfett and the ABCs Tony⊠I read this interÂestÂing artiÂcle sayÂing that WarÂren BufÂfett warned the Bill and MelinÂda Gates FounÂdaÂtion CEO about the ABCs which he was talkÂing about I think the founÂdaÂtion and you know, as heâs sort of leavÂing active parÂticÂiÂpaÂtion in the founÂdaÂtion, he obviÂousÂly had sort of an exit meetÂing with the CEO there and said to him that, âhe sees the big threats to orgaÂniÂzaÂtions like that, ArroÂgance BureauÂcraÂcy and ComÂplaÂcenÂcyâ. âThe ABCs â cockÂiÂness red tape and self satÂisÂfacÂtionâ, he said is the killer of all very large orgaÂniÂzaÂtions. Although that was an interÂestÂing quote comÂing from WarÂren. Heâs probÂaÂbly been inside many large orgaÂniÂzaÂtions. Itâs interÂestÂing to hear him say someÂthing like that. What did you think of that?
Tony 09:53
Yes, heâs been sayÂing it for years. And if you look at how BerkÂshire HathÂaway runs, he tries and keeps the admin [uninÂtelÂligeÂable 10:00] Itâs down to a realÂly small perÂcentÂage of the corÂpoÂrate overÂheads of total size. So I guess you meaÂsure by total sales, maybe but heâs always said that heâs got a team of⊠He used to talk about a team of 16, itâs probÂaÂbly more like 25 these days.⊠Head office doesÂnât need reportÂing to come in from busiÂness heads on what theyâre doing. You know, I got a probÂlem ring him up, you need to make an investÂment, you got this much to do it yourÂself with but othÂerÂwise, give me a call this much leeÂway to do it yourÂself. OthÂerÂwise, give me a call. So, yes, itâs a very difÂferÂent way of runÂning a busiÂness. And itâs a realÂly good way of runÂning your busiÂness when you think that big corÂpoÂraÂtions and Iâm lookÂing out the winÂdow. Now those big towÂers in town. And, you know, theyâre runÂning corÂpoÂrate overÂheads, and maybe 10% of of sales or 10% of profÂits, even someÂtimes. Thatâs a huge drag on a busiÂness. You know, we both work for big busiÂnessÂes, we just see rows and rows and rows of workÂstaÂtions and wonÂder what they all do so and a lot of itâs doing busiÂness with yourÂself. Itâs comÂpliÂance, itâs HR, itâs all that kind of stuff. I donât think BerkÂshire HathÂaway has a HR departÂment. Itâd be HR departÂments in the tradÂing comÂpaÂnies, I would think but yes, BerkÂshire HathÂaway doesÂnât see a need to do it. So yes, itâs so refreshÂing way to run a busiÂness. Itâs more like a small busiÂness runÂning a big busiÂness.
Cameron 11:31
Yes. It remindÂed me the ArroÂgance and BureauÂcraÂcy thing of when I did work at Microsoft, because I saw a lot of that in MicrosoftÂâs heyÂday, very arroÂgant, very bureauÂcratÂic. And it remindÂed me of; there was an email leaked recentÂly that I saw that Bill sent to his senior execÂuÂtives at Microsoft, when Steve Jobs launched the iTunes store in 2005. I think it was just after I left Microsoft. Now 2003, I think it was, I was still there. And Bill was like, how did he do this? I have no idea, they had no idea was comÂing. Bill had no idea how Steve could have got the record comÂpaÂnies to agree to it. And he was talkÂing about the streamÂing apps that they were involved with then real etc, real netÂworks, and how they just been comÂpleteÂly QuanÂtum Leaped by Steve and it was that kind of stuff at Microsoft, I think they just got very comÂplaÂcent to with their conÂtrol of the world. And then Steve came along and launched the iPod, the iTunes Store, the phone, the iPad, and and then died and did the quad facÂtor.
Tony 12:54
I can believe your stoÂry about Microsoft not knowÂing about the iPod before it was launched. OthÂerÂwise, they would have done it themÂselves first. So, I had a whole hisÂtoÂry of just copyÂing whatÂevÂer Apple did, includÂing the operÂatÂing sysÂtem when winÂdows came out.
Cameron 13:10
Yes, well, I rememÂber, when the iPhone came out, Steve Ballmer, who was runÂning the comÂpaÂny at the time famousÂly did a lot of press sayÂing it was going to file the iPhone. Nobody wantÂed the iphone, Apple didÂnât know anyÂthing about makÂing devices, etc, cetera, etcetera. So he kind of signed his own resÂigÂnaÂtion. [crosstalk 13:29]
Tony 13:32
And then he launched the Microsoft phone.
Cameron 13:35
Yes, which flopped. Ok. Over to you. Your trades. You wantÂed to talk about some trades you did last week and why you skipped retailÂers?
Tony 13:49
Yes. So last week, I flagged that I was going to do, a sale of virÂgin UK. And then I was going to ribuy with those funds because I was waitÂing 48 hours for the show to go out and givÂing peoÂple time to make their own deciÂsions on what to do. I didÂnât want to front run anyÂthing by talkÂing about what I was going to buy before the podÂcast went out but I did give a list of four stocks that I was conÂsidÂerÂing. And you know, one of the reaÂsons for havÂing 4 was that I didÂnât know what was going to hapÂpen in 48 hours, one of them might go up or nine might go down or whatÂevÂer. But what I found and Iâm sharÂing this now not so that peoÂple should be doing what I did, but they can see my thinkÂing behind what I did. So itâs not a recÂomÂmenÂdaÂtion in any sort of shape or form. But what I found was there was there was two retails on the lisÂten to gold comÂpaÂny. So there was JB HI-FI and a Grey Daze and there was Ramelius [phoÂnetÂic 14:46] Resources and SilÂver Lake Resources.
Tony 14:48
So 4 comÂpaÂnies.⊠I think from memÂoÂry, the retailÂers may even have been slightÂly highÂer on the list or one of them may have been slightÂly highÂer, but I did skip over it and the reaÂson why was; if you have a look at their share graphs, even though theyâre still in buy terÂriÂtoÂry, so theyâre well above their sell prices and above their buy prices too by a long way, theyâve been trendÂing down recentÂly. So theyâve been dropÂping off. And I donât like necÂesÂsarÂiÂly putting new capÂiÂtal into someÂthing which is in that sitÂuÂaÂtion. So even though itâs in a long term buy, if itâs trendÂing down, Iâll wait and see if it turns around and and look to reestabÂlish when it does get an uptick. But a gold minÂers were on the uptick sitÂuÂaÂtion.
Tony 15:33
So I went in bought some of those instead, I also already had some smallÂish posiÂtions in Ramelius and SilÂver Lake. So it was nice to add to those to bring them up to a sort of core weightÂing in the portÂfoÂlio. And that was hisÂtorÂiÂcalÂly the case, because I donât know for a long time, but hadÂnât had into them for a long time. So that was good. The othÂer thing I just want to sort of, I guess, talk about as amusÂing, so not necÂesÂsarÂiÂly a hard and fast rule at the moment, but someÂthing Iâm thinkÂing about if you have a look at the graphs for some of those, the Gold stocks in parÂticÂuÂlar. And then we can comÂpare maybe to one of the retailÂers but pull out say RMS, which weâll start with first, just kind of call up and stock docÂtor [phoÂnetÂic 16:16] here. You can see that, itâs clearÂly in a buy terÂriÂtoÂry sitÂuÂaÂtion. But you can see that.⊠if you look at the high point, if youâre comÂing to this graph ratio just using our basic rules, which is used the high point, and then the one to the right, so the high points July 2020. And the next high point to the right would be SepÂtemÂber 2020. If you draw a line, youâve almost got like a recent buy for this parÂticÂuÂlar stock.
Tony 16:53
So even though it would have been in buy terÂriÂtoÂry for a long time, going back to at least April 2020. And probÂaÂbly even going back furÂther to DecemÂber 2018, if not even earÂliÂer, because itâs been in a genÂerÂal uptrend for a while. Iâm just sort of thinkÂing about this idea of what I call a secÂond peak. So rather than going back and lookÂing at the buy line sign folÂlowÂing the sell line and workÂing out when it would have been bought. Itâs also in a bua at the moment as well, which is startÂing to firm in my mind as being a nice test. If youâre comÂing into a comÂpaÂny that has been in an uptrend for a while. And youâre wonÂderÂing whether itâs sort of good to go into it again, I havenât done much testÂing on that but just the thought and if you comÂpare it back to say a dares.
Cameron 17:50
Hold on. Before you move off there, can I ask a quesÂtion about Ramelius.
Tony 17:52
Yes, sure.
Cameron 17:53
So, there was a peak on the 31st of May when it hit $1.97. But then it dropped back at by the end of June to $1.695, and itâs still sort of around $1.69 now. Isnât doesÂnât that you know, sort of look like the bank sitÂuÂaÂtion where itâs dropped off for the last 5, 6 weeks.
Tony 18:19
Yes, it has. And I must admit, when I bought it, it was slightÂly picked up there, at the very last drop durÂing the month. So itâs come back a litÂtle bit back to being a flatÂline but the point I was makÂing is more about the facÂtors back into a secÂond buy sitÂuÂaÂtion.
Cameron 18:35
Yes, I thought that bit. You were sayÂing just earÂliÂer that when things are sort of trendÂing downÂwards, you want to wait until they do an uptick. Iâm just not sure how this would look going by that rule but you said it was comÂing back up when you bought it. [crosstalk 18:50]
Tony 18:54
Yes, Iâm pretÂty sure when I looked at it on FriÂday, when I bought on ThursÂday night, it was back up. So that last flatÂline was slightÂly up.âŠ
Cameron 19:01
SorÂry, so Iâm just movÂing to a 30 days daiÂly view. So what was FriÂday the [uninÂtelÂligeÂably 19:09]. This is dolÂlar 60. So the dolÂlar 64 on the night, itâs even lowÂer, but then it came back up to dolÂlar 71 and then drop back down.
Tony 19:23
So, at the moment itâs going flat. at one stage it was going up, amd itâs come back down again a litÂtle bit. But yes, now Iâm genÂerÂalÂly hapÂpy thatâs still in an uptrend. If you comÂpare it to the retailÂers, they will probÂaÂbly even conÂtrast that a bit more. [crosstalk 19:36] Yes, so you can see that, itâs defÂiÂniteÂly come back. And if you looked at the graph now it went to the highÂest point, there is no peak to the right. So itâs pretÂty hard to draw a buy line. So itâs dropped off from its high point. So thatâs one of the reaÂsons why I decidÂed to leave.
Cameron 19:58
You mean hard to draw a secÂond buy line.
Tony 20:00
A secÂond buy line corÂrect.âŠ. We can draw a buy line. Itâs cerÂtainÂly in buy terÂriÂtoÂry. But just this idea of getÂting anothÂer sigÂnal. A more recent sigÂnal I think is interÂestÂing. So anyÂway, thatâs someÂthing are watchÂing that was cerÂtainÂly in my mind when I was doing the research into these comÂpaÂnies last week. Not recÂomÂmendÂed at all, not telling peoÂple they should sell if they already have these stocks. Itâs by no means a recÂomÂmenÂdaÂtion either way. I just wantÂed to explain my thinkÂing about what I did last week. It was kind of interÂestÂing.
Cameron 20:33
So letâs talk about HUM. I did say a couÂple of months ago, that HUM is a dumb name, but I went and bought it anyÂway because it had a good score. And then it hit some trouÂbles. So for this Forum Finance busiÂness last week, I know that itâs up 3% today at the moment.
Tony 20:54
Yes. And I think senÂtiÂments got to be a bit of a guide here because it is sailÂing reaÂsonÂably close to it sell line. I think itâs gonna be around sort of 94 cents, maybe itâs back up to $1. It got down closÂer to that last week when they made an announceÂment. But I was a bit disÂapÂpointÂed. The announceÂment was a bit light on detail. I donât know if theyâve made anothÂer one recentÂly, since last week when I last had a look. To sumÂmaÂrize, thereâs a comÂpaÂny called Forum Finance which the WestÂpac bank, are takÂing to court and tryÂing to get wound up to repay some debts. Forum Finance is a comÂpaÂny.âŠ. Again, thereâs not much inforÂmaÂtion out in the marÂketÂplace, but from what Iâve read is a comÂpaÂny which arranges equipÂment leasÂes and equipÂment finance.
Tony 21:53
So, itâs a midÂdleÂman I guess, with the bank. So the bank will then Forum Finance monÂey and and forÂeign finance will go out and break that down to the small parcels and allow peoÂple to buy equipÂment on leasÂes, like phoÂto copiers, printÂers. This is often a big thing in a caterÂing field. So I think cofÂfee shop you talkÂing about the cofÂfee makÂer, and the big ItalÂian espresÂso machine might be on an equipÂment lease. And then forÂeign finance would make their monÂey out of the gap between what they can borÂrow the amount for and what they can lend it for to the bearÂing cusÂtomers. Now looks like WestÂpac are allegÂing that all of the invoicÂes that a lot of the year, appliÂcaÂtions that forÂeign finance used from end cusÂtomers to arrange loans were fraudÂuÂlent. And Iâve conÂfirmed that with a couÂple of the leadÂing cusÂtomers who are large, like some of the big retailÂers.
Tony 22:50
So the guy who runs the Forum Finance has left the counÂtry. AnyÂway, this is all playÂing out in the course at the moment. And I donât want to allege anyÂthing at the moment until we get resÂoÂluÂtion but the strange thing was [uninÂtelÂliÂgiÂble 23:06], which is high, I pointÂed out and our checkÂlist came out last week and said they hadÂnât expoÂsure, because of all this of $12 milÂlion now. Thatâs pretÂty much all they said. They said that they had some of these equipÂment financÂing, I guess loans on their books, and they sold that in the past or someÂbody else. So itâs a bit hard to underÂstand exactÂly what their expoÂsure is but I guess what theyâre sayÂing is it someÂhow Forum Finance, if theyâve prosÂeÂcutÂed fraud, and maybe also borÂrowed monÂey from from harm, which is in the busiÂness of again, loanÂing peoÂple monÂey, itâs a itâs a buy now pay latÂer operÂaÂtor thatâs been around for a long time. And peoÂple will know when from going into a WychÂwood store and maybe putting a fridge on on 4848 months interÂest free terms, for examÂple, that is often proÂvidÂed for by home which used to be called Flexi group. So we donât have much inforÂmaÂtion and one of the peoÂple on the FaceÂbook group on on the QA, the FaceÂbook group asked a quesÂtion about it.
Tony 24:13
So thatâs, thatâs as much as I know, itâs kind of pecuÂliar that harm havÂing expoÂsure if they sold that loan book to someÂbody else, but maybe thereâs a clause in that sale agreeÂment, which, you know, proÂvides some kind of warÂranÂty to the purÂchasÂer. Iâm not sure. But my response was until we know more inforÂmaÂtion, we sit tight, and we look at the senÂtiÂment, which is turned up today. So maybe peoÂple are startÂing to work out that the raw milÂlion dolÂlar expoÂsure is may not be as bad as first thought.
24:44
Mm hmm.
Cameron 24:46
All right. Well, thanks for explainÂing that. I read I read the announceÂment last week as well. I was like yeah, what are you tryÂing to tell me? Yeah, I donât realÂly know is this is this bad. yet? It actuÂalÂly I got The impresÂsion they didÂnât realÂly know, they were like, LisÂten, we got to put someÂthing out. We have an obligÂaÂtion, but we donât realÂly know yet what what it all means?
Tony 25:07
Yeah, posÂsiÂbly. And itâs oftenÂtimes when the when the notice goes out and itâs pretÂty scant that theyâre tryÂing to comÂply with their obligÂaÂtions to keep the marÂket informed. But they havenât had time to run it the ground yet and work out whatâs going on. So yeah, that could be the case.
Cameron 25:22
Iâve got the sell price in stock docÂtor, the alert set for 91.8 cents, by the way.
Tony 25:29
Okay, I just did a rule check. Thereâs about 94. But okay.
Cameron 25:34
Okay. SomeÂwhere around that. Well, hopeÂfulÂly, I donât have to worÂry about that. Weâll see. Yeah. The dogs of the doubt. 2017. You told me you pulled out an old spreadÂsheet.
Tony 25:47
Yeah, funÂniÂly enough, I was just like, tidyÂing up by my foldÂers in my files on based on my lapÂtop over the weekÂend, fun times when youâre in lockÂdown. But one of them I came across was a an alpha from 2017, which had a list of 10 dogs of the Dow. And so I spent a bit of time workÂing out how they went between now and then. And, you know, no, this is not the way the dogs are they I was meant to work that you hold on to it for four years. But anyÂways, the the the stocks in quesÂtion were DomiÂnoâs PizÂza, TelÂstra, vocus bramÂbles, HarÂvey, NorÂman grainÂcorp, Coca Cola, QB, or the skew metÂals and healthÂscope. And overÂall, those stocks were up on a comÂpound basis, which are up 65% in total, which was about 13% comÂpound growth. And the ASX did about 6% over the same time periÂod. So they did douÂble marÂket, which was good, but nothÂing to sort of write home about realÂly. And the interÂestÂing thing I thought was that if you took four askew metÂals out of that, that list which had tripled in valÂue, or went up three and a half times in valÂue, the the perÂforÂmance is even a litÂtle bit more aneÂmic overÂall. So for those key medals had a comÂpound growth rate of 46% per annum for those four years. And I just sort of struck home to me again, that, yeah, that the dogs of the Dow does repÂreÂsent valÂue. But FortesÂcue metÂals has been a core holdÂing for us in both a dumÂmy portÂfoÂlio, my own portÂfoÂlio for a while now. So there are probÂaÂbly betÂter ways of idenÂtiÂfyÂing the valÂue stocks, in the conÂtrary in stocks, which we do with q IV.
Cameron 27:40
DidÂnât you just say that itâs done douÂble marÂket for the last four years? Isnât that our isnât that our objecÂtive as well? DouÂble marÂket?
Tony 27:46
Yeah, but thatâs good point. But I think we would have achieved betÂter than that. I havenât gone back and had a look, but 13% kegÂger. over that. Four years is not great. I think weâd be getÂting a norÂmal sort of 1918 to 20%. Over that four years. Right? Yeah. So posÂsiÂbly, weâre getÂting triple marÂket over that four year periÂod. AnyÂway.
Cameron 28:06
funÂny to think that FMG was conÂsidÂered a dog four years ago. Yeah. Now they rule the world. Yeah, for now. Letâs rolling it. Yeah. Bye. For now. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Yeah. InterÂestÂing.
Tony 28:21
When I talk about that, givÂen we were talkÂing about dogs down last week. Yeah. Youâre stuck at the week, Tony. Well, I just I recordÂed a sesÂsion with Phil MusÂcatelÂlo, today, a 10 minute sort of, we call I think he calls it the weekÂend stock update. So I did a deep dive into two stocks I did madusa minÂing, which Iâll just rehash, thereâs a stock of the week. I also did a dive into MilÂlenÂniÂum serÂvices, which was our numÂber two stock on the QAV index. Iâll come to that secÂond. But I wantÂed to just go through these. And itâs in preparÂing for Phil show in I went back and looked at not just our scores and our numÂbers, but also annuÂal reports and try to do a bit of a use search what was going on with the busiÂness. And it was actuÂalÂly a realÂly interÂestÂing process. And I just wantÂed to outÂline it because it might be that, you know, when we talk about do your own research, once you get a downÂload, itâs some peoÂple might feel more comÂfortÂable almost writÂing up a stock report. Rather than just sayÂing, here are the numÂbers and hereâs a score, at least it puts it into a sort of forÂmat that theyâre probÂaÂbly used to getÂting from stockÂbroÂkers and readÂing in the paper and stuff like that. But anyÂway, long stoÂry short, I use the annuÂal report from a do some minÂing, or use, they have a quarÂterÂly report because minÂing stocks must report quarÂterÂly. And then our QAV numÂbers to pull togethÂer a sort of proÂfile for it. reducÂer is a PhilipÂpines gold minÂer. And so straightÂaway that highÂlights some of the risks which are going on at the moment. Theyâre in the PhilipÂpines, theyâve got sovÂerÂeign risk. Itâs a mine, which is overÂseas outÂside of AusÂtralian law and tax jurisÂdicÂtion. So there could be some risk there might shine there, it will evenÂtuÂalÂly I mean, the PhilipÂpines is, you know, still operÂatÂing as a solÂid sort of counÂtry is COVID, rich. In a quarÂterÂly report, the manÂageÂment of mine called out the fact that there was COVID in the area, theyâve been in lockÂdown, but theyâre still operÂatÂing as norÂmal had manÂaged to put proÂceÂdures around COVID in place, and weâre still foreÂcastÂing there to reach guidÂance, which was good. So thereâs a couÂple of risks there. Itâs also a goldÂmine. So thereâs a risk of the gold price that the gold price comes down and the profÂitabilÂiÂty of the comÂpaÂny will come down. And that means I went to the gold chart and had a look at it. But itâs still cerÂtainÂly in an uptrend as far as weâre conÂcerned using a three point trendÂlines. The comÂpaÂnyâs comÂmence payÂing a divÂiÂdend in the last half, which I think is a big vote of conÂfiÂdence in the comÂpaÂny by manÂageÂment, you donât start doing that. If you think you might have to cut it at some stage in the future. And itâs on a 5% yield, which is pretÂty, pretÂty neat to 5.85%. And I had to look last week, thatâs thatâs unframed because itâs overÂseas income, but itâs still a high yield. I guess the othÂer point to make at this point in time is that ronÂnie a month away from getÂting fresh figÂures from these comÂpaÂnies, so if anyÂone wants to is conÂsidÂerÂing buyÂing things at the moment, they they cerÂtainÂly can, as I did last week in sellÂing virÂgin UK and and buyÂing some of the gold minÂers, but they also may want to wait for anothÂer month and see what the new results are. or cerÂtainÂly be aware of that. Itâs comÂing up.
Cameron
Do you own MML?
Tony
I have a small holdÂing an MML. And thatâs because I was doing that chamÂpiÂon chalÂlenger stratÂeÂgy where Iâve been testÂing a replaceÂment theÂoÂry of sellÂing out of the lowÂest QAV stock in my portÂfoÂlio and buyÂing into the highÂest one and Iâm only doing it for a small parÂcel of shares and MML was⊠GLE was highÂer on the list but was too small. But MML I could do, so Iâve got about $100,000 in email at the moment.
Cameron 32:24
Thatâs a small amount? I have a small amount of MML. A lot smallÂer than your small amount of MML. AnyÂway. I just thought I just thought I thought we should declare that we both own thatâs.
Tony 32:37
Yeah, no, youâre right. I just wantÂed to make the point. Itâs not a core holdÂing, because itâs too small. AnyÂway, then I startÂed to think about the busiÂness like the numÂbers in this busiÂness are amazÂing, the trades on a price to operÂatÂing cash flow of less than 1.5. And itâs P/E is just over two. And its yield is over 5% nearÂly approachÂing 6%. Its net tanÂgiÂble assets are $1.21. And the share price when I had a last look was 86 cents. So this is like going down the street and havÂing a local cofÂfee shop operÂaÂtor ask you if youâd like to buy the cofÂfee shop for less than the breakÂout valÂue of it. And for one and a half times the cash flows. And you know, twice the P/E, so get your monÂey back in two years. Itâs like the buy of the cenÂtuÂry realÂly is from the numÂbers point of view. And you sort of say, okay, whatâs the catch? And he says, well, itâs in the PhilipÂpines, itâs not down the street. So you know, there is some risk involved. But I think I think the numÂbers are so comÂpelling you take the risk realÂly wouldÂnât you want on a stock like this? I say anyÂway, I thought was interÂestÂing exerÂcise and, and sort of layÂing out the risks and layÂing out the reaÂson for buyÂing it. There. There are othÂer things in there as well. The finanÂcial health is strong. Theyâre doing explore exploÂration to extend the mine life, thatâs a risk because sinÂgle mine comÂpaÂnies have a risk of the mine runs out of gold over a numÂber of years. Excuse me, so theyâre um, they always need to explore an area and try and find ways of findÂing new all loads to tap which which this is hapÂpenÂing with Medusa. Yeah, so the share price graph is good. ConÂsisÂtentÂly increasÂing equiÂty was was good for this comÂpaÂny. And then one of the quarÂterÂly reports or maybe the annuÂal report, they said theyâd paid down all the long term debt. So thereâs no long term debt for this comÂpaÂny. So you know, itâs pretÂty well, well sitÂuÂatÂed. I think the othÂer risk, one thing I didÂnât like about it was that the direcÂtors only held 1% of the comÂpaÂny. So givÂen that so cheap, I was surÂprised they werenât buyÂing more into the comÂpaÂny. So, you know, thereâs some risk, but I think the valÂuÂaÂtion of this oneâs very comÂpelling. I just wantÂiÂng to go through that process of writÂing a stock report almost, you know, 10 minÂutes stock report to see yourÂself to say, is the recent hereâs the, hereâs the valÂuÂaÂtion metÂrics, which I find comÂpelling. And it was a good way of outÂlinÂing it for peoÂple who might want to do that if theyâre kind of new to doing their own research, itâs not a bad way of doing it.
Cameron 35:24
Iâm tryÂing to figÂure out how Iâve lost so much monÂey on it. After lisÂtenÂing to all of that. I bought it averÂage unit cost of 94.5 cents. Iâm just lookÂing at itâs lookÂing at its child stock docÂtor tryÂing to figÂure out when it was ever 94.5 cents. Like how the hell did I pay that much for it? I bought it at marÂket, I would have put it in that marÂket order. And someÂhow I paid way more than it looks like itâs ever been. When did you buy it? Iâm tryÂing Iâm just drilling down into stocked up to Iâll tell you in a sec.
Tony 36:01
It was. Yeah, it was 94 cents in FebÂruÂary. AccordÂing to the 11th of June 11th of June this year. Yeah. Wow.
Cameron 36:14
Yeah. It peaked on the 11th of June. I bought it the Curse of Cameron. Yeah. If you get if you look at if you look at the like 30 day chart, it peaked on the 11th of June. And it is not you just been falling since. Yeah. WelÂcome. EveryÂbody wants to buy him ml I did you a favor. Yeah. hasÂnât fallÂen five outÂside yet. half cents today. Say about sevÂen perÂcents. Since Yeah, but I mean, itâs dry. Itâs been lowÂered. I was went down 80 cents, but itâs come back up. Yeah. Alright. Thatâs interÂestÂing. So it sounds like itâs a good, good opporÂtuÂniÂty. Yeah. And although weâre makÂing recÂomÂmenÂdaÂtions, do your own research. But I then wantÂed to talk about minÂing serÂvices, which was one point highÂer on the on the acuÂity index from Medusa minÂing. So again, itâs a small comÂpaÂny, so Iâm not going to ever own this stock. Because you have it in the QAV portÂfoÂlio. Yeah.
Tony 37:17
Okay, so in the dumÂmy portÂfoÂlio well, interÂestÂing thing about it when I was conÂsidÂerÂing doing this one as the report to Phil for his podÂcast, I decidÂed not to And long stoÂry short, I did the same sort of, you know, write up for it using the annuÂal report. Thereâs no quarÂterÂly report for it, an indusÂtriÂal comÂpaÂny, MilÂlenÂniÂum serÂvices is a is a cleanÂing and secuÂriÂty outÂsourcÂing comÂpaÂny. So it proÂvides cleanÂing serÂvices, and secuÂriÂty serÂvices to corÂpoÂraÂtions. Like big retailÂers, for examÂple. Itâs had a good year, though, which is probÂaÂbly why itâs on top of our list that couÂple of things to note, when I was going through the figÂures, they did manÂageÂment did call out the fact that even though COVID had impactÂed some parts of the busiÂness, it actuÂalÂly had helped some parts as well, because theyâre doing deep cleanÂing. They were doing deep cleanÂing in VicÂtoÂria probÂaÂbly sellÂing up again now in SydÂney. And they are proÂvidÂing secuÂriÂty serÂvices, you know, for quarÂanÂtine, so, they may not conÂtinÂue on hopeÂfulÂly, touch wood. But the big thing that they outÂlined was they received a large amount of JobÂseekÂer from the govÂernÂment. Iâm just going to spend a minute here and call up their annuÂal report. And from memÂoÂry it was someÂthing like $27 â $29 milÂlion of job seekÂer. This was in the annuÂal report. year endÂed June 2020. Iâve got an item in in the cash flow stateÂment which says that there was a net receipt of govÂernÂment grants of $17 milÂlion and they refer us to note six in the finanÂcial stateÂments. And if I go down to note six othÂer income year so they picked up $21.8 milÂlion in fedÂerÂal AusÂtralian FedÂerÂal govÂernÂment grants and picked up anothÂer $2.5 milÂlion from the New Zealand govÂernÂment for a total of a litÂtle bit from this QueensÂland state govÂernÂment but a total of $24.5 milÂlion and then I had to obviÂousÂly make out some payÂments to to the workÂers, the peoÂple who are employed but the net operÂatÂing cash flow. So net operÂatÂing cash flow for the half was operÂatÂing cash flow and stock docÂtor we have $35 milÂlion in net operÂatÂing cash flow for the half comÂpared with 120,000 for the half priÂor. This is DecemÂber 20. Iâm lookÂing at and we donât have the receipts from the govÂernÂment sepÂaÂratÂed in stock docÂtor but we do see an operÂatÂing othÂer operÂatÂing line of $33 milÂlion worth of operÂatÂing cash flow So there was a lot of a lot of monÂeyâs comÂing in elseÂwhere in the reports, I talked about payÂing $7 milÂlion in extra payÂments to employÂees. So my sort of hirÂing, everyÂone else has said that they actuÂalÂly paid down a heck of a lot of debt last year to the tune of about 20 milÂlion bucks. And so nothÂing wrong with that, I guess, unless that monÂey was meant to go for wages, but Iâm not I havenât done enough due diliÂgence to know whether thatâs the case or not. But anyÂway, the comÂpaÂny received lots of monÂey from the govÂernÂment and paid it paid off lots of debt. So itâs in a good finanÂcial sitÂuÂaÂtion going forÂward, itâs it seems to be a good comÂpaÂny on most of the metÂrics. But my reaÂson for highÂlightÂing all this is that I donât think weâre going to see MilÂlenÂniÂum serÂvices as high up on the on the QAV checkÂlist, next half when the next results come out, because of that big COVID payÂment to them, which went through the operÂatÂing cash flow line. So Iâm not sayÂing we should sell it from the portÂfoÂlio, I cerÂtainÂly wouldÂnât. But yeah, I think itâll be low down the list. If you look back on the operÂatÂing cash flow, over the last sort of five or six years, the highÂest itâs been is $8.3 milÂlion. And then before that, after thatâs been as low as negÂaÂtive 2.7 milÂlion, so withÂout that sort of big job keepÂer payÂment, Iâm susÂpectÂing itâs kind of dropped back into maybe one or $2 milÂlion of operÂatÂing cash flow, which means it wonât score as well for us going forÂward.
Cameron 41:30
So anyÂway, it also might mean that when they report their results, their share price might plumÂmet and breach of sell line or someÂthing, or we might have to get rid of it. I mean, what are the impliÂcaÂtions if we hold it?
Tony 41:42
If we hold it, I donât think there are any many impliÂcaÂtions, I donât think Iâd be the first perÂson to work out that theyâre operÂatÂing cash flows, you know, been supÂportÂed by the govÂernÂment. And the comÂpaÂny cerÂtainÂly been doing a lot of restrucÂturÂing to try and reduce their costs anyÂway, over the last three years. I was readÂing about it when I was going through their annuÂal report. But I just wantÂed to highÂlight the fact that, in some casÂes, net operÂatÂing, operÂatÂing cash flow can be someÂthing which is tranÂsiÂtoÂry. And so, again, like I nevÂer went to this stage of doing my research to buy this comÂpaÂny, but I would be, you know, conÂvincÂing myself that it was still a good comÂpaÂny to invest in if I was buyÂing this comÂpaÂny, based on its inflatÂed operÂatÂing cash flow at the moment.
Cameron 42:31
Yeah, thatâs whatâs going on with them. But if you go back to what Iâm lookÂing at the five year chart to get back to 2017, the share price was up around $1.68. And then at the beginÂning of 2018, it just startÂed to go through the floor got down and with lowÂer 17 cents in May of 2019, and then startÂed pick up just after COVID startÂed to realÂly pick up after that. So yeah, someÂthing apparÂentÂly, oh, maybe they lost a big conÂtract or someÂthing. SomeÂbody changed with their busiÂness.
Tony 43:02
Yeah. So as I said that, like readÂing back through the annuÂal report, they talk a lot about spendÂing the last three years restrucÂturÂing. So itâs, I would guess they had lots of debt, and have a bit of a near death expeÂriÂence a few years ago, which is probÂaÂbly the trough youâre talkÂing about back in sort of 2019, maybe even earÂliÂer, as the share price dropped through 2018. And then they actuÂalÂly employed a restrucÂturÂing speÂcialÂist as the CEO who spent a lot of time ratioÂnalÂizÂing conÂtracts. So not not renewÂing conÂtracts that were low marÂgin or even negÂaÂtive marÂgin. And also investÂed in techÂnolÂoÂgy in terms of being able to attract, you know, who was signÂing off and who was signÂing on. And that sort of employÂee trackÂing is a big thing in these kinds of comÂpaÂnies these days. And if you recall, we spoke to Yon reso, execÂuÂtive chairÂman of DempÂster about how their prodÂuct was used for health and safeÂty trackÂing anyÂway. But I imagÂine it could also be used for this kind of employÂee trackÂing, if youâve got someÂone workÂing out as a shopÂping cenÂter doing the cleanÂing at night, you want to make sure that theyâre there, theyâre there, theyâre proÂducÂtive, theyâre safe, all that kind of stuff. So the comÂpaÂny did invest in that kind of techÂnolÂoÂgy. So yeah, a bit of restrucÂturÂing went on, was overÂburÂdened with debt. And now theyâve been able to pay down a large amount of debt, who knows maybe the p&l their results when it comes around next month actuÂalÂly realÂly good, because the share price has been trendÂing up. But I, I did want to point out just the anomÂaly in the QAV sysÂtem that have someÂthing strange hapÂpens once off to operÂatÂing cash flow, it can make someÂthing look very good to us. Right? Yeah.
Cameron 44:44
I see that going back to late 2018. The CEO resigned slash was fired by the sounds of it pushed and they replaced him with the guy who just resigned then back in May of this year when we talked to This one we were talkÂing about the show once before we comÂpletÂed that restrucÂture that you talked about.
2021-07-20
Tony 45:04
Yeah, yeah, thatâs right. Yeah. In the in the notices, and you know, who knows if thatâs true or not, but he, he moved on because he sees himÂself as being a restrucÂturÂing speÂcialÂist wantÂiÂng to go into othÂer sitÂuÂaÂtions like that into turn around. And I think they proÂmotÂed maybe from withÂin, but someÂone had been there for at least a year anyÂway, I think into the role. So they see it much more as a busiÂness as usuÂal type appointÂment for him. Yeah. AnyÂway, interÂestÂing. I was lookÂing at the analyÂsis for your show, and I thought was worth sharÂing.
Cameron 45:41
But this isnât the sort of thing that youâre going to start doing for all stocks
Tony 45:45
are, I kind of do it in a short handÂed way? cam. So I still just flick through the numÂbers and and sort of form the opinÂion based on that quickÂly. SomeÂtimes Iâll go into the operÂatÂing cash flow, if it looks a bit like MilÂlenÂniÂum serÂvices and say, well, hang on, why is it so so big this quarÂter, or this half? But thereâs nothÂing that strucÂtured like that, that Iâll do, Iâll genÂerÂalÂly, you know, get the QAV score, do some research. And the research being, you know, maybe have a look at the annuÂal report, and he doing you search, and then decide whether to buy or not. But, you know, Iâve been doing it for years. But it was just this process of going out and actuÂalÂly writÂing it out, which I found very interÂestÂing again.
Cameron 46:28
And in your expeÂriÂence, obviÂousÂly, the job seekÂer sitÂuÂaÂtion is fairÂly unusuÂal. Yeah. In your 30 years, have you seen things like this hapÂpen before where thereâs an unusuÂal amount of monÂey that hits a busiÂness and then is gone the next year and creÂates a bit of a spike?
Tony 46:52
I canât think of it from I canât think of any othÂer ones besides this. Iâm thinkÂing it might be the case, if thereâs like a sale of a busiÂness and as a payÂment that comes, you know, as an urn out, maybe or a royÂalÂty from a minÂing comÂpaÂny that spun off or someÂthing like that. That might be a case, but I canât think of any speÂcifÂic examÂples. Hmm.
Cameron 47:14
And even in those casÂes, though, I mean, they get that monÂey in and then we would assume theyâre gonna use it to.
Tony 47:21
And thatâs my point of serÂvice is they paid off a whack of debt. And that was the that was the biggest risk, I think was being over geared. So that seems to have cleared so we werenât, we might even find that come the next results of share price goes up. Hmm, yeah. Well,
Cameron 47:36
it cerÂtainÂly gone up since we added it to the Q IV portÂfoÂlio a week ago. So a couÂple of days ago, actuÂalÂly wasÂnât even that long. Yeah. And that was big semi. Yeah, good. Okay. Thanks for the analyÂsis. By the way, harm is now up. 4.12%. Itâs gone up since weâve been talkÂing. So
Cameron 47:57
twice as bad. As gonna say if we were putting this out live, I would say itâs everyÂone jumpÂing on but itâs not that. Well, the marÂkets closed. AnyÂway.
Cameron 48:07
Yeah, I want to do a shout out to all the guys over in wha got an email after the last show from Glen ConÂroy over there sayÂing, Hey, lisÂten, you menÂtioned many meeÂtups around the counÂtry. And if anyÂone else is doing in Perth, Iâd be interÂestÂed. And I said, Well, no one is but let me email everyÂone wi and I think we got like 20 guys, now that a get a go to a are interÂestÂing going to a Perth meetÂup. So thatâs great. Iâm tryÂing to think there must be a betÂter way of introÂducÂing when peoÂple sign up to QA v club, if theyâre in a major geoÂgraphÂiÂcal region or capÂiÂtal city, to introÂduce them into the pre existÂing QA v comÂmuÂniÂty thatâs there and make introÂducÂtions. So Iâm going to try and figÂure out a betÂter way of doing that. Like a mini FaceÂbook group or a mini some sort of thing. So I can say, oh, add yourÂself to add yourÂself to that if you want to meet othÂer memÂbers in your area, because I think this, this idea of old memÂbers and new memÂbers getÂting togethÂer for beer and pizÂza and going through checkÂlists and scoreÂcards, and all that kind of stuff is is terÂrifÂic. I just want to figÂure out how to facilÂiÂtate it. So if anyÂone has any ideas for a good way of doing that. Please let me know. While Iâm talkÂing about club memÂbers shout out to James Ed, Andrew, Doug, and I think cosÂman who have all postÂed scoreÂcards to the FaceÂbook group in the last few days. Doing a great job. EveryÂoneâs itâs realÂly takÂing off everyÂone sharÂing their results. I think James and Ed got togethÂer. Theyâre only litÂtle mini cube AV club and did it togethÂer and comÂpared notes as they went. So thatâs great. WhereÂas, so realÂly excitÂed to see peoÂple sharÂing this stuff and everyÂone else jumpÂing on and you jumpÂing on and proÂvidÂing feedÂback and comÂmenÂtary. And I agree with this. I donât know about that. Whereâd you get that from? Itâs realÂly, realÂly excitÂing.
Tony 50:24
I agree. Itâs good, isnât it? Itâs evolvÂing. Well, itâs realÂly well, I hope for us to get a group of like mindÂed peoÂple helpÂing each othÂer.
Cameron 50:32
Yeah, and because I think weâve been doing this long enough now that weâve got enough peoÂple that have been around long enough, and they not only are comÂfortÂable with the process, but theyâve got the results like Mark menÂtioned earÂliÂer with his 61% return. And thereâs been othÂer guys who have reportÂed this stuff weâve talked about earÂliÂer, so they know what theyâre doing. They know how to run it. So thatâs great. They can teach othÂers and spread the live. SpeakÂing of spreadÂing the love add in or out, Tony, we need to
Tony 51:07
I saw them getÂting used. Itâs out. I saw the post last night actuÂalÂly replied on the FaceÂbook group to someÂone who was askÂing you about it. And itâs a falling knife. Iâve got to get betÂter at FaceÂbook post because I found a couÂple of my posts are just gotÂten misÂplaced or putting into like, plugged into a difÂferÂent part of the thread than what I thought they were going to go to. So I did I did pubÂlish a graph in a and a note sayÂing I had a falling knife. It was part of my latÂest downÂload which was midÂdle of last week or maybe ThursÂday because it had bumped up into a buy but itâs been going buy sell buy sell buy sell all the way down itâs cerÂtainÂly below it sell price now as well as being above its buy price. So itâs a falling knife. A SchroÂdingÂer Yes. Still, I
Cameron 51:54
think we talked about it a couÂple of weeks ago and we said a shortÂing it. So
Tony 51:57
it did still downÂload at some stage between then and now and thinkÂing okay, maybe itâs picked up enough to be a buy, but now itâs a falling knife.
Cameron 52:07
Right. Okay, AGD, AusÂtral gold? no bueno. Okay, unless you have anyÂthing else, letâs get into the quesÂtion where weâre an hour into this, and we havenât done any quesÂtions. Yeah, for me talkÂing about things. So yeah. Ben, hi, Cameron. First time quesÂtion as a new lisÂtenÂer investor. WelÂcome, Ben. QuesÂtion about rule one, how much monÂey or perÂcentÂage is enough to trigÂger a sell to avoid losÂing monÂey with broÂkerÂage each new stock I buy begins as a loss. But being so small, Iâm up to about 10 stocks. Now. Some have dropped a couÂple of perÂcent before shootÂing up and othÂers dropped a few perÂcent and stayed there. kindÂest regards lovÂing the show so far. Cheers, Ben. And I thought itâs good because I actuÂalÂly donât know the answer to this quesÂtion, either. Because Iâve got some stocks, like some of the ones Iâve menÂtioned on the show that are like MML that have fallÂen. And I know weâve talked before about well, how close are they to the sell line? So rule numÂber one for new lisÂtenÂers is donât lose monÂey as WarÂren BufÂfetÂtâs rule numÂber one. But you know, itâs so Iâm not realÂly sure how, what I should be doing with these. I need this, Ben.
Tony 53:22
Yeah. And I think the first point that the Benâs realÂized is that, I think probÂaÂbly every time I buy a stock, if I look at it, the next day, itâs gone down by at least the broÂkerÂage, and someÂtimes itâs takÂing a downÂturn that day. So it might be down by more in the short term, itâs just the sort of ranÂdom nature of when you buy it. But overÂall, it will go up. So I donât I tend not to look at things, you know, for a while after I buy them until thereâs a trend thatâs estabÂlished. Because Yeah, you just worÂry yourÂself about nice down. 1% is down 2% is down 3%. Next is backÂup 5%. So, yeah, when youâre that close to the bite, itâs, itâs not worth lookÂing at it. Right there. That aside, there is no real hard and fast rule with rule numÂber one, I think, if you took the view that, like you, like you, in the case that you had with MML, you bought someÂthing and itâs down 6% or whatÂevÂer it is, you know, if you sold it, and then you bought someÂthing else, and it dropped 3% and you sold it and youâve bought someÂthing else it dropped 5% sudÂdenÂly youâre down, you know, 14% in three trades. WhereÂas if you had bought it and wrote it out, because you think itâs a good buy, and the trend overÂall is up, you know, it may be 10% up so youâve lost monÂey. So I wouldÂnât apply this sort of stop loss rule to anyÂthing I bought recentÂly. And then in terms of othÂer than that, itâs realÂly I think itâs conÂtext based. So yes, I am I am lookÂing at the three point sell line. If itâs getÂting down close to three point sell line, I might go a litÂtle bit negÂaÂtive in terms of what I paid for it to see if if senÂtiÂment turns around. But if it crossÂes the three point so long Iâm sellÂing. And I may have lost a bit more monÂey than if I had just sold it out at breakeven. But thatâs someÂtimes like up someÂtimes I go down. Itâs kind of like a 50/50 bet. But itâs also the conÂtext of what whatâs the share price doing, like we talked before about Look at that, look at those retailÂers, and theyâre in a downÂtrend. If I hypoÂthetÂiÂcalÂly, if I bought a dais at the top, and even though itâs still on its uptrend, and it was now down 10, or 20%. And the downÂtrend looked like it was conÂtinÂuÂing, and I couldÂnât see a reaÂson for it to improve, I might be temptÂed to sell because of rule numÂber one. So itâs conÂtext bias. Itâs itâs on the flip side of that weâre now a month away from New figÂures. So I might hold on and see what the new figÂures say. Which again, could be worse the share price either way. But at least weâre operÂatÂing with, you know, with some numÂbers then rather than five or six month old numÂbers. So it realÂly is thereâs no hard and fast rule. It realÂly is conÂtext base. We had an expeÂriÂence with a dumÂmy portÂfoÂlio durÂing the year that ramilÂlies resources we bought in, put it in the portÂfoÂlio, it went went up, it came back, it startÂed to trend below our buy price, and I said sell it. Thatâs rule numÂber one. So weâve at least preÂserved their capÂiÂtal, but then it turned around and went for a run. So we would have, you know, made good monÂey out of it. So itâs pretÂty hard to know what to do in applyÂing rule one. If If I had to sort of sum it up, Iâd say if I realÂly thought the trend was going to conÂtinÂue down. And I was at my breakeven point with either InvokÂer or one, but I wouldÂnât do it soon after buyÂing the stock.
Cameron 56:39
How long would you Wait, do you think before you had that conÂverÂsaÂtion with yourÂself?
Tony 56:44
A couÂple of weeks or a month? Yeah, right? Yeah. Okay. You know, thereâs a difÂferÂent stoÂry. If the CEO resigns tomorÂrow, or the CFO resigns tomorÂrow, and thereâs a you know, bad smell about the comÂpaÂny, Iâd sell it. But yeah, thatâs for a difÂferÂent reaÂson. RealÂly.
Cameron 56:59
Iâm lookÂing at, you know, my own portÂfoÂlio. Thereâs some stocks there that I bought roughÂly a month ago. Medusa is one of them. Itâs down 6.3% since I bought and that includes broÂkerÂage by the way. Iâm down at MTO motorÂcyÂcle holdÂings is down 4.43% hums down 8.27% GLA is now down. 6% because I opened my bloody mouth and said it was going up and I jinxed it. But again, that that includes broÂkerÂage as well, which we then sort of trades on doing broÂkerÂage is actuÂalÂly you know, sigÂnifÂiÂcant. So but you know, when I look at the sell prices for those, theyâre way above the three point train line. So Iâm like, Yeah, like, if I guess my ratioÂnale, what Iâve been talkÂing to Tyler, about these sorts of things is, look, we bought it because itâs scored? Well, itâs good. Well, because we believed itâs a good comÂpaÂny, itâs perÂformÂing well, itâs genÂerÂatÂing cash, itâs got a good track record. Iâm just going to ignore the marÂket until it does someÂthing sigÂnifÂiÂcantÂly, I bought it for the right reaÂsons. Iâm just going to wait and see what hapÂpens. RealÂly, I donât want to be too jumpy about it, you know?
Tony 58:11
No, exactÂly. Thatâs I think if youâre jumpy, you just accuÂmuÂlate lossÂes. That way, if you if you saw all those posiÂtions, youâre bookÂing your loss of, you know, maybe five to 10% on those on whatâs maybe about a quarÂter of your portÂfoÂlio, which is going to be a sizÂable loss, and then you may buy back into things that have the same iterÂaÂtive cycle again, so youâre just comÂpoundÂing your lossÂes. So because you donât know. Yeah, you donât know. I think what gives you comÂfort when, when that hapÂpens, and when it hapÂpens to me is that if I looked at MML, for examÂple, yeah, it was down 6%. The trend, the share prices, overÂall is good, itâs going up, even if I had to pick the wrong day to buy it. And the numÂbers are realÂly comÂpelling. Theyâre fanÂtasÂtic. So Iâd be very conÂfiÂdent to hold it through a, you know, a swing below while I paid for it.
Cameron 58:57
And then the othÂer conÂverÂsaÂtion that I had with him was about Myer, because itâs up 48% since we bought it a month, realÂly. Thanks to SolÂly Lew. Yeah, but and he says, well, should we sell it? You know, take that when and reinÂvest it. And I said to him the othÂer day, yeah, but you donât know what youâre reinÂvestÂing it in. You know, it could. It could be some dogs, we donât know. So it gets back to water your flowÂers and pull your weeds I think for someÂthing like that. Yeah.
Tony 59:25
And, and youâve got capÂiÂtal gains tax. If youâre sowÂing someÂthing quickÂly. If youâre not holdÂing it for more than a year, youâre payÂing twice as much capÂiÂtal gains tax. So thereâs that issue. And look, you know, if you think about it, if Sony likes it and is investÂing heavÂiÂly in the comÂpaÂny, he doesÂnât think itâs going to go down. Yeah, heâs a very expeÂriÂenced and sucÂcessÂful tradÂer. So that was also my thinkÂing about MeyÂer as well.
Cameron 59:48
He might be tryÂing to take a priÂvate again, might be tryÂing to buy the whole thing. driÂve it all the way up to the moon. Could I say the Wall Street read itâs no Hey, good quesÂtion, Ben, thank you for askÂing that to clarÂiÂfy that anothÂer one from Ben. He says as a fairÂly young investor simÂiÂlar age to your sons would Tony can, Scott sorÂry, would Tony conÂsidÂer cerÂtain stocks as betÂter stocks to invest in when conÂsidÂerÂing longer or short terms in the marÂket? For examÂple, what do you ever conÂsidÂer adding a metÂric to the scoreÂcard highÂlightÂing a stock highÂer for potenÂtial growth over 30 years as opposed to say, five years I asked fairÂly naveÂly as a 25 year old, Iâve had my first lesÂson underÂstandÂing super and readÂing that super funds offer difÂferÂent strateÂgies of investÂing dependÂing on your age, for examÂple, going to more cash as you get oldÂer, as a more safer, less risky away, as opposed to more monÂey in the marÂket for comÂpoundÂing potenÂtial over 40 years. hope that makes sense. WonÂderÂing what Tonyâs thoughts are for QAV stratÂeÂgy for younger investors with a heap of time, as opposed to QAV for you old basÂtards 50 Plus, he didÂnât say all basÂtards, I added that in but I yeah, I could read between the lines. Thanks,
Tony 1:01:06
Ben. Great quesÂtion. And Geez, all I can say is I wish I was you startÂing out. HavÂing such a levÂel head on your shoulÂders and workÂing out what to do. And yeah, standÂing super in investÂments. Itâs fanÂtasÂtic. I mean, youâve got such a head start on peoÂple like myself, and and probÂaÂbly you can as well that probÂaÂbly, defÂiÂniteÂly faceÂtious. You canât realÂly you canât wind back the clock and get that back. So you canât i canât under emphaÂsize how imporÂtant it is. Theyâre just startÂing at 25. But to answer your quesÂtions, the first one about if I knew someÂthing was going to be a betÂter 30 year stock and a short term stock. Yeah, I defÂiÂniteÂly score it well, but Iâve got no idea. whatâs whatâs the stock the whole for 30 years. Iâm thinkÂing back was 30 years ago from now the 1990s. Thereâs a thereâs There are so apples, Apple. Yeah. Well, thatâs right. Thereâs one is AmaÂzon is Apple, Google. Yeah. But there was also an MySpace headÂstock, pets.com. And pets.com. says, Well, at the time, but I was thinkÂing like, Yeah, why would it be part of korsmeyÂer? Back then, but Iâm not sure it would have been a great investÂment to hold for 30 years. So if you have any insight into what makes a good long term hold, let me know about it, I find it realÂly hard to preÂdict. You know, FortesÂcue metÂals wasÂnât around them. But itâs been a great part of our corÂnerÂstone of our portÂfoÂlio. So yeah, what I did think of was propÂerÂty was your own house. So benÂeÂfit, if you donât own your own house, or youâre thinkÂing about when you might buy your own house, thatâs cerÂtainÂly a long term hold. And it does give you the benÂeÂfit, as we spoÂken about in some of the earÂly shows of them, once you get your mortÂgage under conÂtrol, to realÂly gear into the marÂket, and start to invest once you have your mortÂgage under conÂtrol that propÂerÂty will give you a you know, maybe 910 11% return longer term, but the gearÂing abilÂiÂty of being able to borÂrow means that the ROI on your equiÂty in the propÂerÂty is huge. So itâs a, itâs a bit difÂferÂent to the share marÂket where use itâs much hardÂer to get into, unless you have a propÂerÂty where you pay down the mortÂgage, and you can get into it withÂout equiÂty. So that would be where Iâd be focusÂing your attenÂtion. I mean, itâs great to be investÂed in the share marÂket, you should do that too. But if you if you can get your propÂerÂty underÂway, thatâs a great 30 year hold. In terms of what you said about super, and youâre makÂing good point. So the conÂvenÂtionÂal wisÂdom with superÂanÂnuÂaÂtion is if you think about superÂanÂnuÂaÂtion, it gets offered to peoÂple who are employed, genÂerÂalÂly they have to tick a box and say, I want to go into a growth fund or a balÂanced fund or an Income Fund, or whatÂevÂer. And the conÂvenÂtionÂal wisÂdom is you go for into growth funds, your first 20 years and then balÂanced funds after that, and an income on retireÂment. And Iâve nevÂer realÂly bought into that arguÂment because I think he should be putting your monÂey work at his best return. So Iâve always been fulÂly investÂed in the share marÂket using my sysÂtem and havenât tried to balÂance it away with, you know, othÂer asset classÂes. I donât like diverÂsiÂfiÂcaÂtion. HavÂing said that, you know, we do have propÂerÂty, we live in a nice apartÂment and all that. So we are someÂwhat diverÂsiÂfied away from the share marÂket, but realÂly, weâre still part of the AusÂtralian econÂoÂmy. So genÂerÂalÂly, if one hurts one, it hurts the othÂer. AnyÂway. So, Ben, I think youâre doing great. I donât think he should go into a balÂanced portÂfoÂlio as you get oldÂer. I think heâs stayÂing in growth assets. The resÂcue, which the finanÂcial adviÂsors will talk about is the day before you retire, the share marÂket crashÂes and you go into retireÂment with a sort of an income than you thought you had and thatâs cerÂtainÂly a risk but as peoÂple like Steve SamÂmartiÂno have said you just take the divÂiÂdends and keep going. Because, you know the divÂiÂdends will if they do drop or drop much less than the share marÂket does because ComÂpaÂnies will do whatÂevÂer they can to keep those divÂiÂdends going. So yeah, I donât buy into that stock marÂket drop on the last day of workÂing type arguÂment. I think you can recovÂer from that. And the flip side is, if you if youâve been in a growth portÂfoÂlio for a long periÂod of time, when you get to retireÂment age, youâve got a shitÂload of monÂey. If it does drop by 20%, today, before you retire, you just shrug your shoulÂders and say, Okay, well, Iâll make that back in the next three or four years, or one year or six months, if youâve got a great investÂment stratÂeÂgy, so itâs nevÂer worÂried me.
Cameron 1:05:34
I said to I read my reply to Ben, I said, itâs great quesÂtion, last, Tony. But my guess is that if Tony knew what was going to do well over 30 years, he would buy it corÂrect. You know, thatâs the because, you know, youâre a long term investor, too. I mean, youâre a young guy, you plan to be around for at least anothÂer 30 years. So if you knew you would buy that, if he knew someÂthing was going to do conÂsisÂtentÂly, well over 30 years, you would buy it, right?
Tony 1:05:57
Yeah, I would. And I havenât been able to idenÂtiÂfy that. I mean, thereâs, thereâs the Peter Lynch approach, where if you look around with all the big brands that you use, you know, the the Myers and the credÂit card, the bank that you use, you get your mortÂgage worth and the utilÂiÂty you get your gas with, and all that kind of stuff and put a portÂfoÂlio togethÂer of solÂid brand names. As my wife table before we were marÂried before we were togethÂer, she did I cared about it wasÂnât QA type numÂbers, but it did beat the index, because, you know, those solÂid comÂpaÂnies conÂtinÂue to do well. They donât conÂtinÂue necÂesÂsarÂiÂly for 30 years. I mean, some of those comÂpaÂnies arenât around anyÂmore, like, CSR, for examÂple, was one of her holdÂings got, you know, eatÂen up by I think, borÂrow from memÂoÂry. And itâs had its ups and downs. So, yeah, it is posÂsiÂble to conÂstruct a portÂfoÂlio for the long term, but I found itâs betÂter to do the sort of investÂing weâre doing. If we do have to sell, you know, in six months or a year. Well, so be it. And as we say, to their best investÂment stratÂeÂgy is to buy TARDIS or to build a TARDIS. So you can go back and go forÂward and see whatâs kind of worked, but we donât have that, unforÂtuÂnateÂly. Mm hmm. Yeah, God, but Iâd give her a TARDIS. Go back and see what what was up in the marÂket. You go back to Julius CaeÂsar, and live the advenÂture and all those.
Cameron 1:07:22
Yeah, Iâd get back actuÂalÂly, to see my kids when they were five. Again, I go back to see Hunter and TayÂlor when they were five and Roman. Go back and spend time with my father. My grandÂparÂents, you know, thatâd be more imporÂtant to me than going and seeÂing Julius CaeÂsar going spendÂing time with my famÂiÂly that are gone, or kids when they were litÂtle stuff like that? Yeah, yeah. I go back. I go back when I met you 13 years ago, or whatÂevÂer, and go, Hey, what is this thing that you do? ActuÂalÂly, tell me now? Donât tell me 10 years from now tell me now. Iâd be a litÂtle bit more pushy. Tom. Hi, Cameron. In the sumÂmaÂry you sent out the graph for copÂper is the copÂpers futures. If the if you use the graph Iâve attached which I think is the curÂrent price, itâs a lot closÂer to the three point trend line. Any thoughts on this?
Tony 1:08:16
Yes, Tom? Toms corÂrect. So he uses in stock docÂtors called XCU_ which is the physÂiÂcal cost of copÂper. And last last week, we use the copÂper futures when we graphed it. You do have the abilÂiÂty and stock docÂtor to comÂpare one with the othÂer. So if you go into the advanced graphÂing, you can put one in and then overÂlay it with the othÂer using the ComÂpare facilÂiÂty, which I did before. And last time is right, the copÂper physÂiÂcal graph is much closÂer to its sell line and the copÂper futures graph. They do have a very strong corÂreÂlaÂtion. HisÂtorÂiÂcalÂly, itâs only in the last sort of three months where the futures graph has gone up and the physÂiÂcal graph hasÂnât. I have limÂitÂed knowlÂedge of the futures marÂket. But genÂerÂalÂly speakÂing, I would think that those kinds of difÂferÂences trade themÂselves away as the futures conÂtracts get closÂer to the curÂrent date. So either the futures all come down or copÂper will go up is genÂerÂalÂly what hapÂpens. Itâs, you know, it canât itâs itâs foreÂcastÂing, but it must be copÂper traders out there who think the price is going to go up because theyâre buyÂing futures conÂtracts at a highÂer price to the curÂrent price.
Cameron 1:09:32
So I just tryÂing to underÂstand what you said there. So if I go Iâm in the stock comÂmodiÂties thing. Is it copÂper physÂiÂcal? Is that the one Iâm comÂparÂing copÂper futures to?
Tony 1:09:43
Yes. So let me go look at that myself. So Iâm going into the stock docÂtors advanced chartÂing secÂtion on the front page where it says marÂkets and Iâm clickÂing on comÂmodiÂties, and then XCU_ copÂper physÂiÂcal, they call it corÂrect. Thatâs the one that But Thomas told us to look at.
Cameron 1:10:03
Yeah, I think heâs right. So if I do the three point trendÂline for that, in fact, itâs breached the sell line, Iâd say today
Tony 1:10:11
RealÂly? I donât think so, Iâll do a comÂpare. So the futures Stock DocÂtor code is HG#. Iâll just comÂpare it to XCU_.
Cameron 1:10:26
unless Iâm drawÂing it wrong, but or maybe itâs right on it.
Tony 1:10:32
Yeah. I have a look today, and it was just above it from what I can see.
Cameron 1:10:35
Or Yeah, just above it. Yeah. NothÂing, you probÂaÂbly right. Just tryÂing to get the line, right. So using still COVID cofÂfers the low point March 2020. And then Iâm using L2 at may 2020. Same as the futures L2
Tony 1:10:51
Yeah. So Iâm using Iâm using March 2020. And then may 2020.
Cameron 1:10:58
Yeah. So it comes in? Yeah, youâre right. The curÂrent prices, just a litÂtle bit above it, but itâs very bloody close.
Tony 1:11:06
Yeah. InterÂestÂingÂly enough that in the course of the day, the futures has dropped down as well. It must be a quite a volatile graph. When I had a look, today, when I was preparÂing it was up. Now itâs down anyÂway, it does track pretÂty close to the real copÂper price. But yeah, no good pick up there, Tom. And weâll watch it because it does affect stocks, like C6C in our portÂfoÂlio.
Cameron 1:11:31
Hmm. And letâs see whatâs going on with that. At the moment. Weâre up two and a half perÂcent today. Itâs come back quite a bit since its high Point in May, though, owns up quite a bit, come back over the last couÂple of months, slightÂly, but still up 250% since we bought it so you know. Right? Being good. We bought it at the end of OctoÂber $1.15. curÂrentÂly tradÂing at $4.03. Holy crap, that was a good call TK. That was a good call worked well
Tony 1:12:09
done. And like if Iâm hapÂpy to sell it if it if the copÂper price breachÂes. So I have a look at the three point trendÂline calÂcuÂlaÂtor, a copÂper, I put the those two low points into a spreadÂsheet, I get $3.67 as my sell price, whatâs it curÂrentÂly? Right $4.03? Yeah, so itâs a litÂtle bit a litÂtle bit lowÂer. The sell price is a litÂtle bit lowÂer than the curÂrent price.
Cameron 1:12:41
Yeah, well, Iâm hopÂing you made a worÂthy sacÂriÂfice to the gods and Gods for that one.
Tony 1:12:49
Copy usuÂalÂly is a proxy for the world econÂoÂmy. And whenÂevÂer the world econÂoÂmy grows, copÂper goes up because it gets used in law of conÂstrucÂtion. And thatâs whatâs driÂven since the COVID cough. But perÂhaps the Delta outÂbreaks is startÂing to slow that growth and peoÂple are takÂing your point of view that we might not grow as fast from here. I donât know.
Cameron 1:13:13
All right, a good one. Thank you, Tom, Doug. Doug postÂed his scoreÂcard to FaceÂbook, but I noticed he had one stop there with an operÂatÂing sorÂry, what have I writÂten here? price to operÂatÂing cash flow of 11. And he said I didÂnât think we filÂtered for it just scored for it. This is for ppl. So I wantÂed to ask you, and I think I did I think youâve answered this on FaceÂbook, but just for the peoÂple lisÂtenÂing in. So when I do a scoreÂcard, the first thing I do is filÂter out everyÂthing with an operÂate a priced operÂatÂing cash flow of greater than sevÂen. And I just deal with the stuff thatâs left. Do you do that? Or do you just keep them all in and make a deciÂsion based on their QAV score, regardÂless of the price to operÂatÂing cash flow at the end of the day?
Tony 1:14:08
Yeah, the latÂter. So I do a downÂload. I do sort by price, operÂatÂing cash flow and then colÂor code my downÂload sheet. So the red ones are above sevÂen, but Iâll leave them in. And then when I do my manÂuÂalÂly enter data and then do a sort to get to the the top scorÂers list. The filÂterÂing, the sortÂing process creÂates the list based on the QAV score and someÂtimes at the botÂtom of that list, there are comÂpaÂnies with a price to operÂatÂing cash flow highÂer than sevÂen. If they have a very good qualÂiÂty score, they can they can sneak in. Not not often but right. They can Yeah. Right. Thatâs interÂestÂing. Okay. And also Iâll leave it in for the othÂer othÂer reaÂson couÂple reaÂsons cam so Iâm here with him because if I read an artiÂcle about a comÂpaÂny in the paper, and I think I betÂter go and check what that is in the queue. I have a list. I guess I could, I could see what it is, I could see that it was about operÂatÂing cash flow of a price, the operÂatÂing cash flow sevÂen, if it wasÂnât there, but Iâd like to go through and see see them in the list still and say, okay, that oneâs got a price operÂatÂing cash flow of 20 is probÂaÂbly not going to be of interÂest at all. So Iâm gonna leave it alone. That hapÂpened today, there was a an artiÂcle by our friend Michael GoldÂstein, it was in. Well seen, one of the emails Iâve got today, talkÂing about retail food group, which is a comÂpaÂny Iâve owned in the past, and then went very close to going broke. And Michael, sugÂgestÂing it might come back, I jumped, first thing I did was open up the spreadÂsheet jumpÂing to my downÂload list, look for it, and it had a price operÂatÂing cash flow of 20. So I wouldÂnât be doing any more furÂther research on that, based on that. So thatâs why I keepÂing all the price to operÂatÂing cash flows. I donât I mean, our QAV filÂter doesÂnât downÂload the whole, the whole stock marÂket, because if it has a negÂaÂtive cash flow, we donât downÂload it. But thereâs someÂthing like six or 700 stocks in that first downÂload, which I still keep. Yeah, yeah,
Cameron 1:16:09
well, they I use a Andrew FlitÂmanâs verÂsion of the sheet now. And theyâre all still in there. I just filÂtered them out. So theyâre hidÂden, but I can just clear all filÂters and still see them. But so would you do the manÂuÂal data for stocks that have an operÂatÂing priced operÂatÂing cash flow greater than sevÂen? You still do all of that? You know, I donât get it. You donât? Okay. Well, so you might as well be filÂtered out if youâre not going to do it.

No, because one of the things I do from time to time is Iâll go to that startÂed the rate and my downÂload lists where weâve got comÂpaÂnies which are above sevÂen. And Iâll just have a look, you know, Iâve got posÂiÂtive senÂtiÂment, right. If theyâre like point O nine, then maybe putting the manÂuÂal into data room will flip them over into a onto the top scorÂers list. So yeah, I do. I do check the top entries in that list, which is just below the filÂterÂing.
Cameron 1:17:04
Okay, yeah. All right. Good to know. Well, thank you for pickÂing me up on that. Doug. I learned someÂthing. I obviÂousÂly missed that along the way. Last quesÂtion from Glenn. I, by the way, Michael GoldÂstein headÂed his fund last finanÂcial year didÂnât see him in the top list.
Tony 1:17:19
I did read an artiÂcle in the paper sayÂing you done realÂly, realÂly well. Yeah, yeah. Maybe itâs a difÂferÂent clasÂsiÂfiÂcaÂtion of fund or someÂthing. She get emoÂtionÂal. TalkÂing about super funds. I donât know. Maybe,
Cameron 1:17:32
Glen, one of the reaÂsons to sell is the comÂpaÂny issues new finanÂcials or updatÂed guidÂance, which negÂaÂtiveÂly affect its outÂlook, just tryÂing to preÂpare myself for the next round of reportÂing and wonÂderÂing if Tony could expand on this point furÂther? Are the key meaÂsures in finanÂcial reports that are key to look for? The finanÂcial reports are long? And whatâs this sayÂing Knights was the Game of Thrones thing. knights of law, the Knights along in the danÂgers many othÂer finanÂcial points along and there are key secÂtions he will pay? Are there key secÂtions he will pay attenÂtion to?
Tony 1:18:05
Yeah, well. So to answer the quesÂtion JeanÂnette, like for at a high levÂel genÂerÂalÂly. UsuÂalÂly, even before I get a chance to look at the comÂpaÂny, the share price has reactÂed to the new figÂures. And if thereâs someÂthing bad in May, itâll the share price will drop. Before I even get a chance to do some analyÂsis, it genÂerÂalÂly hapÂpens on the day that the results are announced that peoÂple are all over it and makÂing their moves. That doesÂnât worÂry me so much. I mean, Iâm always hapÂpy to give up the first 10 or 20% of a share move. Which allows me time to do my analyÂsis and bear in mind that stock Dr. Why have the numÂbers in there straightÂaway can take three or four days someÂtimes for those numÂbers to come in. The thing review may not report on the comÂpaÂnyâs announceÂment until the next day or the day after, or the weekÂend or someÂthing like that. So by the time we find out what the reaÂson is behind the share price moveÂment, the moveÂments already hapÂpened. So thatâs the first thing to know is to is to, I guess pay attenÂtion to whatâs hapÂpenÂing with the price. After that you didÂnât, you didÂnât want to go and you didÂnât want to go and have a look at hopeÂfulÂly weâve got numÂbers in stock docÂtor, Iâd be focusÂing on the operÂatÂing cash flow, Iâd probÂaÂbly do a downÂload and see whether itâs on our list or whether itâs itâs itâs gone up or down on our list, which is probÂaÂbly going to be because the operÂatÂing cash flow. If it still scores Well, in the share price has moved I probÂaÂbly then think it was the the outÂlook the comÂpaÂnyâs givÂen guidÂance of some kind either up or down draÂmatÂiÂcalÂly. And then I go to their announceÂments and just I usuÂalÂly proÂvide a preÂsenÂtaÂtion as well to go with the announceÂment. And I probÂaÂbly skim through the first couÂple of pages in that which would have the, you know weâve done realÂly good stuff in it. And we may not do as good in the future would be in there someÂwhere to perÂhaps if the share price went down or where we can hit the lights. Get the ball out of the park. Next half, which might be in there too, which would make the share price go up. So theyâre probÂaÂbly the things I pay attenÂtion to othÂerÂwise, Iâm just doing norÂmal sort of downÂload string comÂpaÂny reportÂing seaÂson and, you know, lookÂing at the list and makÂing my deciÂsions based on the numÂbers. I think I did want to Glen I did say that the share price, Iâll work it out before we do, which is true. But Iâd also cauÂtion peoÂple from reactÂing in a knee jerk style to a share price, a quick share price moveÂment, Iâve often found it benÂeÂfiÂcial to wait until I get the numÂbers and do my own analyÂsis. And yeah, if a share price has dropped, Iâve, you know, lost a bit of monÂey. But oftenÂtimes, the the game, like the dance hapÂpens, where announceÂment hapÂpens, everyÂone just makes a knee jerk reacÂtion to that sort of announceÂment in the first era of the marÂket being open after the announceÂment, the share price will move draÂmatÂiÂcalÂly involved and be volatile. And then it might setÂtle down. And then calmer heads preÂvail, and youâll see okay, well, okay, the share price is down 20%. In a couÂple of days, whatâs going on here might be a time to buy. Now, it often hapÂpens that you get a bounce back from from that iniÂtial sort of itâs theyâre almost like headÂless chickÂen. I mean, Iâve been at announceÂments when you know, these, these young guys and their pinÂstripe suits runÂning with a handÂful of paper, get on their phones quickÂly and run out again. And they are the next announceÂment next comÂpaÂny report. Because it is a is a tough time. Thereâs thereâs like, you know, 20 comÂpaÂnies reportÂing on the same day, youâve got to be runÂning around to get to underÂstand whatâs going on. And youâre makÂing snap deciÂsions, which may in hindÂsight, prove not to be the best one. So yeah. stay the course. Glen. I think I just outÂlined what I do. But yeah, genÂerÂalÂly, Iâm just downÂloadÂing from stock docÂtor. Iâm basÂing deciÂsions upon the not on the numÂbers, unless thereâs some horÂriÂble, huge move in the stock price like it did drop 20% or 20%. And I start to do some research there, but genÂerÂalÂly that thatâs not the case.
Cameron 1:22:06
And from memÂoÂry, youâre norÂmalÂly doing two or three downÂloads a week durÂing reportÂing seaÂson, but this time as youâll probÂaÂbly be in lockÂdown, and wonât be playÂing golf. Iâll be doing them every day. When I go. Yeah, yeah. Well, letâs hope not exactÂly.
Tony 1:22:26
a month away. So hopeÂfulÂly Iâm out of lockÂdown by them.
Cameron 1:22:29
Yeah, God, letâs hope so. Yeah. Well, thatâs the night is long and full of TerÂrors is the Game of Thrones, quiÂet. I was tryÂing to rememÂber their finanÂcial reports too long and full of TerÂrors. Thank you, Tony. Thatâs it. Itâs a full lead. 90 minÂutes. Good luck. Hope you you know, youâre allowed to, you know, get out or canât get out soon.
Tony 1:22:56
Yeah, I can get out now and just donât realÂly feel itâs safe. But anyÂway, it will hapÂpen soon. And yes, for the past five years. I can put the roast on. In case peoÂple were wonÂderÂing the BrisÂbane dinÂner with us not hapÂpenÂing this week. Yeah, no, thanks for that now. Seems like every time I book a interÂstate holÂiÂday COVID hapÂpens. So I just itâs like, yeah, yeah, yeah. All right. Thanks. Bye. Have a good one. Thanks, Cameron. Bye.
