Hi QAVVERS,

I saved Chrissy’s life this week.

Wednesday night, about 9pm, I’d just got home from kung fu. Sitting on the lounge, eating some dinner, Chrissy was in the kitchen, making her lunch for Thursday. I’m telling a story about something that happened at training, when, suddenly, she starts making a strange noise and waving her hands in the air, pointing at her throat. I leap up and she comes towards me, pointing at her back and making “hit me!” hand gestures. I hit her. Again. Again. She mimes the Heimlich. I perform it. Poorly. She still can’t breathe. I keep at it. Thump her back. Squeeze her stomach. Over and over. Twenty seconds go past. Thirty. I’m thinking “is she going to die because I never took a first aid course!? ”

Finally — she gasps. She can breathe. The small piece of raw cauliflower she had been munching on had been dislodged.

The second time in her life she nearly choked on something. The first time, her mother saved her life. This time, it was my turn.

That puts the world’s drama into perspective.

She’d just put Fox to bed and he’d said what he always says: “Stay Safe, Don’t Die”.

We haven’t told him how close she came. Don’t want to add to his anxieties.

AUSTRALIAN MARKET UPDATE

The All Ordinaries fell roughly 3.1% over the past week to close at 8,920.20 on Friday:

  • Australian stocks ended the week at a more than two-month low; the ASX 200 fell 0.9% on Friday to 8,741.20, its lowest close since 2 July, and lost 2.1% across the week, its steepest drop since mid-March.

  • A surge in oil prices sparked fresh inflation fears throughout the week, with Brent crude futures hitting a four-month high of US$109.97 a barrel as attacks on shipping routes in the Middle East and Houthi strikes on Saudi oil facilities raised fears of spreading conflict.

  • The European Central Bank raised its deposit facility rate by 25 basis points to 2.5% this week, citing ongoing inflation pressures generated by conflicts in the Middle East.

  • Locally, RBA Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser said policymakers will weigh further tightening at the September meeting, while Assistant Governor Sarah Hunter warned of limited tolerance for stronger price pressures, prompting all four major banks to forecast another hike before year-end, with NAB tipping September and others November.

  • Heavyweight miners led the week’s declines, with BHP falling 4.1% and Rio Tinto 3.5% on Friday alone, while lithium miners Liontown and PLS dropped 8.6% and 7.4% respectively, as uncertainty over US copper tariffs added to selling pressure across the materials sector.

  • Australian government bond yields jumped above 5% across the week, the highest level since mid-2011, as oil prices above US$100 a barrel sustained inflation concerns and drove a global bond sell-off.

US MARKET UPDATE

The S&P 500 fell roughly 1.6% over the week to close at approximately 7,592, its fourth consecutive daily loss by Wednesday:

  • Stocks dropped as WTI oil prices topped $100 a barrel, amid growing fears of higher inflation from a prolonged war in the Middle East, while Treasury yields continued their climb to multi-year highs.

  • August Producer Price Index inflation rose to 5.4% year-on-year, above expectations of 5.3% and up from the prior month’s 4.8%, while core PPI year-on-year rose to 4.6%, the highest since June 2026.

  • Treasury yields jumped after the Treasury Department said it would triple its buyback operation of longer-dated government debt to $6 billion, sending the 10-year yield to 4.857%, its highest level since November 2023.

  • Oil and fuel benchmarks have gained further since the start of September on fresh escalation in the war and the increase in buying from Asia, adding to pressure on equities amid the possibility of a Federal Reserve rate hike next week.

  • Chip producers fell on surging long-dated credit costs, with Marvell, Intel, and Lam Research each down around 3%, while Nvidia dropped 1% and Oracle fell 1.5% ahead of its earnings.

So, let’s get into my weekly updates and see where we are at.

QAV MYTH KILLERS

INVESTING AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT

This week I don’t really have a “myth killer”. It’s more of a “why is it so” Professor Julius Sumner Miller article.

Tony did a Pulled Pork on Amplitude Energy (AEL) this week, a domestic gas supplier working across the Otway, Gippsland and Cooper basins that is cutting debt and locking in long-term offtake contracts with the likes of AGL and Energy Australia. BUY LIST

buy list|672

Each week, we produce a buy list based on our value investing system that we share with our QAV Club members. The intended primary purpose of this buy list is for club members to use as a reference for comparing their own buy list. In theory, all of our buy lists should look pretty similar each week.

PORTFOLIO PERFORMANCE

We compare our performance to what we think is the most relevant benchmark (SPDR 200 in Australia, S&P500 in the USA), but if you’re new to investing, these comparisons might not mean much. Instead, you can compare our performance to the top-performing Super Funds in Australia and see why an amateur active investor (who has a system to follow) can out-perform most of the “professionals”.

We publish a fresh performance snapshot once a month. Weekly noise doesn’t tell you much in a value-investing system — what matters is the trend.
